Basic Rules

  1. A pitch that hits within the target is a called strike.
  2. Foul tip to the back stop on a 3rd strike is an out. Any other foul is a strike. A caught foul ball is an out.
  3. A missed swing or 3 called strikes is an out in the Pro Division.
  4. Any combination (swings or called) of 3 strikes is an out in Amateur Division.
  5. 5 balls is a walk. Hit batters do not take a base.
  6. 3 outs per inning. 4 innings per game.
  7. In extra inning play, both teams start the 5th inning (and onward) with the bases loaded.
  8. No base running. Imaginary runners only.
  9. On a walk, runners only advance when forced. On a hit, all runners advance the same number of bases as the hit. A hit ball must reach the singles lines to be a fair ball.
  10. A ball reaching the ground on or past the singles line is single, landing on or past the doubles line in the air is a double, hitting the wall in the air is a triple, and landing over the wall before hitting the ground is a home run.
  11. The batting order must include everyone on the team and remain constant all game.
  12. A 10-run mercy rule is in effect after the 3RD inning.

Pitching & Fielding

  1. Fielders have to field a ground ball in front of the singles line to be an out. Ground balls must be fielded with minimal bobbling to be an out, or it is ruled a single. A ground ball not reaching the singles line is a foul ball. Fly balls may be bobbled, but must be caught before contacting the ground or wall, to be an out.
  2. A pitcher must finish pitching to any batter they begin to face.
  3. Removed pitchers may re-enter to pitch.
  4. Maximum of 3 fielders, including pitcher. Fielders may play anywhere in fair territory no closer than the singles line to home plate.
  5. On a ground out, if there is a double play (force) situation, the fielder can attempt to throw and hit the strike zone in the air for a double play. If successful, the batter and runner on 1st base are out. If unsuccessful, only the batter is out. In both cases, all other runners hold. The attempt must be made immediately after the ball has been clearly fielded cleanly.
  6. If there is a runner on 3rd base and the batter hits a fly ball, the batting team can call out “Tag” while the ball is still in the air. After the fielder has made the catch, he may immediately throw to hit any part of the strike zone target or backstop to get the runner out at home. The throw may bounce, roll, or pass between the strike zone supports. If successful, the runner on 3rd is out. Otherwise, the runner tags and scores. In both cases, all other runners hold. If the batting team does not yell “Tag”, no play can be made.

  1. Only regulation WIFFLE® plastic bats and balls may be used. TFT will provide bats and balls for all teams. Only those balls provided by TFT may be used for tournament play.

Teams found attempting to use or create an intentionally-scuffed ball are subject to forfeit. Bats may only be taped up to 12” from the bottom of the shaft.
